Description

Workshop Description

This four part workshop will teach you:

  • The basics of command line Linux, necessary to run most bioinformatics software
  • Upstream rRNA microbiome analysis including pre-processing your reads, OTU picking, and OTU filtering
  • Downstream rRNA microbiome analysis including statistical analysis and visualization methods
  • How to best utilize QIIME2 to perform these analyses

This workshop consisting of four Fridays (9am - 12:30pm), will teach attendees how to analyze rRNA amplicon (e.g. 16S, 18S, ITS...) microbiome datasets for the purpose of investigating the presence and diversity of microorganisms. This workshop first aims to familiarize attendees with basic Linux commands necessary to run microbiome analysis programs, and to give an introduction to amplicon design and sequencing. Attendees will be provided a practice dataset, and begin analysis by properly processing and filtering the sequenced reads, followed by clustering these reads into operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Following this, attendees will learn how to perform common statistical analysis and create informative visualizations to investigate abundance and diversity of microorganisms present in the dataset.

This workshop is appropriate for all graduate students, post-docs, and researchers. No prior knowledge of Linux or R are required.

FAQs

What are the dates and times of this workshop?

The workshop falls on the four Fridays from October 5 through October 26th. Each of the four sessions go from 9am to 12:30pm.

How do I pay using a C-FOPAL account number?

Please register as a "Participant (Pay $50 via UIUC account)". During checkout, please provide us with the account number you wish to use for payment. Please note that we are not able to accept grant accounts (those starting with 1-4 and 1-5). If you want to use a grant account, we suggest paying by card and then providing the receipt to your department business office for reimbursement.

Do I need to bring my own computer?

Dell desktops will be available for every attendee. You may bring your own laptop, but make sure to have the necessary software installed (you will be emailed these details before the workshop starts).

What if I need to miss a day of the workshop?

All of the sessions will be recorded (assumming no technical difficulties arise), and necessary materials and slides will be posted on a workshop webpage. If you need to miss one of the sessions, you will have at least a week to review the recordings and materials before the next session.

Why have the workshop fees changed?

Thanks to the generosity of the OVCR (Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research) we are able to offer our workshops for a nominal fee. Without this support, the true cost to run such workshops could be hundreds to over a thousand dollars per attendee.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
